Jaipaul Singh

Professor | BSc, Dip Ed, PhD, DSc

Professor Jaipaul Singh is a Guyanese by birth. He was born in Guyana in 1946. Guyana is next to Brazil in South America. He admitted to the University of Guyana in 1966 and he graduated BSc in Biology and Chemistry in 1971 and the Postgraduate Diploma in Education in 1972.

He left Guyana for the University of St Andrews in Scotland to do his PhD. He graduated in 1978 and thereafter, worked as a research fellow at Universities of St Andrews, Dundee and Liverpool. In 1984, he moved to the University of Central Lancashire (UClan) in Preston, UK where he worked for almost 36 years moving up the promotion ladder until he reached Professorship in 1993.  In 2011, he received the higher degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) for his research on cellular regulation and cell signalling in health and diseases. His research interest is mainly on diabetes and sudden cardiac death.

Professor Singh has supervised about 1000 BSc (Hons) and 15 taught MSc students or their research projects. But most importantly, he supervised successfully 76 research students at MRes, MPhil, MD and PhD levels. He was the external examiner in MBBS course in Medicine at the University of Guyana and the University of the West Indies at Mount hope in Trinidad. To date, he has examined over 120 research students internationally. He has published about 300 research papers including original articles, reviews and book chapters. He has presented over 450 refereed abstracts at national and international meetings. He retired in 2020 at the time of covid- 19 but was appointed as an Emeritus Professor in Physiology.

Professor Singh was instrumental in developing research and postgraduate research training at UCLan for over 36 years. He has wide experience in research training and governance. He also collaborated with several Universities internationally including the University of Guyana since 1987. He worked closely with Professor Emanuel Cummings since 1996 and their collaboration is still ongoing. Prof Singh is married with two adult children (a son and a daughter) and three grandchildren.
